Female carer partner, aged 45
In January 2025, Nutrition PD received an Innovation Funding from Parkinson’s UK. Our goal was to see if people with Parkinson’s and their care partners would use and benefit from the programme. We also wanted their feedback on how to improve it and whether it could help them with their diet and symptoms.
With this funding, we launched a 3-week user testing pilot of the Mediterranean PD programme with 30 participants across the UK. The programme included videos, recipes, meal plans, and a chat group where participants could ask a dietitian questions.
After the user testing pilot, participants were asked to complete an online survey. Ten of them also took part in interviews to share their thoughts on the programme.
The results exceeded our expectations. Highlights include:
The pilot successfully included a diverse group of participants, covering different stages of Parkinson’s, disease onset, care partners, genders, and ethnic backgrounds.
An impressive 60% of participants completed the full programme. This is far higher than the typical 3 to15% completion rates seen in other online courses.
At the start of the programme, the average score on the Nutrition Quiz was 65%. By the end, it had risen to 84%.
Many participants said they felt more confident talking to healthcare professionals and family members about their nutritional needs.
89% of participants were satisfied or very satisfied with the Mediterranean PD programme and said they would likely recommend it to others with Parkinson’s.
One of the most valued aspects of the programme was that it provided clear, tailored nutrition advice specifically designed for people with Parkinson’s.
100% of those who completed the survey agreed (at least somewhat) that the avatar used in the programme was easy to understand.
Some participants were surprised to learn that Kayla, the guide in the programme, was actually an avatar. Kayla was praised for being clear, easy to understand, and impressively lifelike.
After completing the programme, participants rated their likelihood of making dietary changes at 9.4 out of 10.
The average Mediterranean Diet Score rose from 8.7 out of 20 (44%) to 11.9 out of 20 (60%).
Two of the ten participants interviewed reported more regular bowel movements.
All interviewees (100%) said they trusted the information due to the involvement of dietitians.
In the online survey, 95% said it was important or very important that the programme was developed by a dietitian.
The involvement of registered dietitians in the programme built trust and gave participants confidence in the programme.
